Nigeria Police Chief engages protesting retired Officers, assures of improved welfare

Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has met meeting with the protesting retired Police officers, in Abuja, FCT.

The meeting, which held evening Monday, July 21, 2025, taking place in the Peacekeeping Hall at the Force Headquarters, in the FCT.

Earlier, some retired Police officers Monday, had protested at the National Assembly (NASS) to demand their removal from the country’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the protesters, who are mostly elderly, had earlier withstood the rain, holding placards, and chanting anti-government songs at the NASS.

Some of the retired Police Officers also besieged the Force Headquarters protest against their inclusion in the CPS.

IGP Egbetokun, addressing the protesters, explained the welfare of retired Police Officers is being addressed, but the exit of the Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme is not something that could be done immediately.

The Police Chief also urged the leaders of the protest to shun spreading wrong narratives as the Force would not abandon their own.

The Nigeria Police Force, in a message via its verified social media account, Monday evening also said the ex-Police Officers “gathered peacefully to express their concerns over retirement benefits.â€

The Force also stated: “The IGP’s presence is a demonstration of the Police leadership’s commitment to listening to the plight of the retirees and ensuring their voices are heard in a dignified and constructive manner.

“The engagement is ongoing in a calm and orderly atmosphere, attended only by the genuine retirees who chose the path of dialogue.â€

The Nigeria Police assured the public of further updates emanating from the meeting.
