UK commends Nigerian Government on gains of economic reforms

The United Kingdom (UK) Government has commended the various economic and trade initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing them as bold, brave and positive.

ñ reports Richard Montgomery, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated this during his courtesy visit to Nigerian First Lady (Senator) Oluremi Tinubu, CON, in the State House, Abuja, FCT.

Montgomery said the UK Government had observed much positivity in the Nigerian economy, particularly in respect of new opportunities being created by the difficult but necessary reforms President Tinubu has introduced since assumption of office May 2023.

The British High Commissioner also noted that home Government is impressed by the track record of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for delivering empowerment to women in key areas, especially education, health and humanitarian services.

He equally stated these reforms and moves have led to enhanced trade partnership between the two countries.

The British envoy further affirmed that the UK Government is also paying attention to the ongoing Constitutional Amendment and call for Special Seats for Women in the National Assembly.

First Lady: We’re committed to addressing Nigerians’ challenges

In her response, First Lady Tinubu assured Montgomery and his team that the Nigerian Government and the Renewed Hope Initiative, which is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would continue to work towards meeting the challenges of Nigerians.

Mrs. Busola Kukoyi, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media to the First Lady Monday, August 18, 2025, also quoted Senator Tinubu to have said: “I believe we can help each other, if we really show concern”.

“RHI focuses also on women empowerment in the informal sector. These are the ones we are touching their lives directly.”

She also agreed with her guests that the number of women in the National Assembly (NASS) is dwindling, pledging to support the ongoing process to improve the numbers.

The Nigerian First Lady further noted: “We have to really know the right people to represent us, who can really do the work and that is what we have to enlighten our women about.”

The visiting team also include the British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, Mrs. Kukoyi stated.
