NSIB begins investigation as Abuja-Kaduna train derails, injures 6 passengers

A passenger train travelling morning Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from Abuja, FCT, to Kaduna derailed.

The train accident is Saud have caused panic and confusion among passengers and their loved ones after the incident.

It was learnt the train incident occurred along the Kaduna corridor, shortly after it has departed Abuja, FCT, around 11 a.m., en route Kaduna Tuesday morning.

A passenger on board the train reportedly described the scene as chaotic, with people scrambling to safety in fear and confusion after the accident.

Though the actual cause of the derailment remains unknown as of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation of injuries or casualties thus far.

Security sources, however, disclosed that the Nigerian Military officers have been deployed to the site of the incident to support the evacuation stranded passengers.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), in a statement Tuesday, also confirmed the train derailment involving its Kaduna-bound AKTS train service.

Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of NRC, stated the incident occurred at 11:09a.m. at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station.

Opeifa said emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals had already been mobilised to assist at the scene of the accident.

He also said: “Full complement of security already on the ground, as effort is ongoing to move all passengers on train back to Abuja safely.”

NSIB commences probe into Abuja-Kaduna train accident

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a probe into the Abuja-Kaduna train that derailed in Kaduna, triggering panic among passengers.

Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, who disclosed this in a statement Tuesday, said preliminary reports indicated that six passengers sustained injuries, with no fatalities recorded.

The Bureau said it had since dispatched a go-team to the site to collect evidence, liaise with stakeholders, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement quoted Alex Badeh Jr., NSIB Director-General, as expressing sympathy for those affected.

Badeh stated: “We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered.

“Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation.â€

The Bureau assured Nigerians that the investigation would examine both direct and underlying factors contributing to the derailment, to issue recommendations to prevent future incidents. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
