Chef Baci takes the world with largest pot of jollof, affirms Nigeria remains ‘Giant of Africa’ + Photos

Thousands of Nigerians and foreigners alike converged on Lagos Friday, September 12, 2025, to watch 28-year-old Ms. Hilda Baci, a Nigerian chef, food influencer, and former Guinness World Records holder’s latest world record bid to cook the world’s largest pot of jollof rice.

Baci once hold the 2023 title for the longest cooking marathon – an exhausting 93 hours and 11 minutes – nearly four days.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports Baci, in her second bid, Friday, again, made the world’s largest pot of jollof rice, a popular dish across the West African subregion.

Jollof rice is a staple of Nigerian cuisine, featuring rice simmered in a tomato based sauce, often paired with meat or seafood for consumers.

As the cooking process began, Baci’s team used giant spatulas to stir the food in an equally huge pan at the event.

It was gathered the Nigerian star chef’s huge jollof rice recipe, included 4,000kg (8,800 lb) of rice, 500 cartons of tomato paste and 600kg of onions, all poured into a custom-made pot of almost 23,000 litres to prepare the pot of 200 bags of rice.

Working with a group of assistants wielding massive wooden spatulas, Baci’s crowning dish was later distributed for everyone to enjoy.

The massive dish took several hours to cook, and now the cooking project is expected to be validated by the Guinness World Records with photo and video evidence of Baci’s latest achievement.

Speaking on her experience on the project,

Baci told BBC Pidgin that it took her a year to plan how she would tackle the mammoth cooking challenge in Lagos.

She stated: “We are the Giant of Africa, and jollof is a food that everybody knows Africans for.

“It would make sense if we had the biggest pot of jollof rice, it would be nice for the country.”

Manufacturing the giant steel vessel to hold her dish took a culinary team of 300 people two months to make, report also noted.

It is recalled that Baci won a competition for her version of jollof rice 2021, and later became a national sensation 2023, when she claimed the cooking marathon Guiness World Records.
