The Federal Government has removed Mathematics as a compulsory subject for students seeking admissions into Arts-related courses of study in the Nigerian Universities.

绿帽献妻 reports the Federal Ministry of Education said the far-reaching decision was aimed at expanding access and supporting students whose strengths lie in the Arts, promoting inclusivity, and creativity in education in the West African country.

The government explained the education reform is expected to create about 300,000 additional admission slots for admission-seeking candidates annually.

The move, according to the Ministry, is also made towards reducing the number of millions of out-of-school youths, as well as strengthening vocational and technical education in Nigeria.

Earlier in the week, the government through the Federal Ministry of Education, had announced that applicants for programmes, such as Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Languages could then qualify without Mathematics, though English Language and relevant Art subjects remain mandatory.

The Ministry, however, said Mathematics remains compulsory for Science, Technology, and Social Science-oriented courses in the Universities.

Meanwhile, in line with the latest regulatory framework on admissions into the country鈥檚 Universities, the Federal Government stated that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and National Universities Commission (NUC) are expected to update their admission guidelines, while schools and counsellors should equally adjust subject advice to reflect the new policy in the education ecosystem.
