Chief Dan Agbese, a Nigerian media professional, Co-founder of Newswatch Magazine, and one of the leading lights of modern journalism in the West African country, is dead.

Late Chief Agbese co-founded Newswatch with Dele Giwa (1947-1986), Ray Ekpu and Yakubu Mohammed.

ñ reports the former colleagues of the deceased confirmed death of the popular veteran editor and columnist Monday, November 17, 2025, in Lagos, at age 81.

Agbese’s career spanned over five decades and left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s media landscape. The deceased had served as the Editor of New Nigerian and The Nigeria Standard Newspapers, General Manager of Radio Benue, in the Middle Belt region, Special Adviser/Director of Information in Benue State in the Second Republic.

Until April 2010, Agbese was the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director of Newswatch Communications Limited, publishers of the trailblazing weekly news magazine.

He was Managing Editor and Deputy Editor-in-Chief/Deputy Chief Executive prior to his becoming Editor-in-Chief.

The international award-winning magazine, for decades, redefined investigative journalism and in-depth political reporting in Nigeria.

A scholar of Mass Communication and Journalism, Agbese earned degrees from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Columbia University, in New York, United States (US).

He was also a prolific writer and author.

Among his notable books are “Nigeria Their Nigeria”, “Fellow Nigerians”, “Style: The Newswatch Style Book”, “The Reporter’s Companion”, “Style: A Guide to Good Writing”, and “The Columnist’s Companion: The Art and Craft of Column Writing”.

Late Agbese was widely admired for his clarity of thought, superb mastery of language use, disciplined prose, and unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity.

He equally stood as a mentor and inspiration to many in the media profession.

His commentaries, often delivered with a mix of wit and piercing critique, shaped public discourse for decades.
