Mental Health: NPA urges Nigerians to prioritise wellbeing, safety amid challenges

*The Nigerian Psychological Association FCT Chapter urges the citizenry to prioritise their mental health, and seek timely help in regard to the current socio-economic, political and insecurity tensions with attendant dislocations in the country

Against the backdrop of the current socio-economic, political and insecurity tensions with attendant dislocations, the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA) FCT Chapter has urged residents to prioritise their mental health, and seek help in a timely manner.

Mr. Victor Adejoh, Chairman of the Association, noted this in a press statement issued Saturday, November 22, 2025, in Abuja, FCT.

Adejoh highlighted the need for a collective effort at addressing the mental health challenges posed by the current insecurity and prevailing situation in the the West African country.

The NPA Chairman also urged residents of the FCT to remain vigilant, and adopt necessary safety measures during this period.

He equally stressed the importance of community connectedness as a proven protective factor for mental resilience.

Adejoh encouraged Nigerians to strengthen neighbourhood support networks, engage in shared problem-solving, peer support, and avoid isolation for collective wellbeing.

Mental health foundational to national stability, productivity, says Adejoh

Expatiating that mental health is a collective responsibility, the Chairman of NPA urged public institutions, workplaces, schools, and community leaders to prioritise mental health awareness.

He further stated: “As psychologists and mental-health professionals dedicated to public wellbeing, we are deeply concerned about the silent psychological toll these challenges continue to inflict particularly on vulnerable groups, workers, students, and families already battling socio-economic stress.

“We strongly advise all residents to remain vigilant and adopt every necessary safety measure during this period.

“Personal security, situational awareness, and adherence to official safety advisories are essential to minimise exposure to avoidable risks.”

Adejoh as well urged policymakers to recognise that strong mental health is foundational to national stability and productivity.

The Association restated its commitment to providing professional guidance, crisis support, and public education.

Adejoh further encouraged FCT residents to seek help early, and to reach out to qualified mental-health practitioners whenever emotional difficulties become overwhelming.
