Emphasising the objective of the agriculture initiative, the Ogun State House of Assembly has said that the Federal Government Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) will encourage more farmers鈥� participation in agribusiness and boost food security in the country.

Members of the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry of the Ogun State House of Assembly stated this during their recent on-the-spot assessment of plantations at Otete in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state, reports Nigerian Tribune.

Hon. Sylvester Abiodun, Chairman of the Committee, represented by Hon. Yusuf Adejojo, his Deputy, promised that the Assembly would continue to legislate appropriately towards sustaining the intervention programmes in agriculture.

Report further said Hon. Abiodun recalled that the Assembly had engaged Dr. Adeola Odedina, Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, on the benefits of the scheme.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that the programme would increase value addition; hence, the need to put in place a legislative framework towards providing consumable agricultural produce and raw materials to further position Ogun State as a leading entity in food production in Nigeria.

The Commissioner for Agriculture disclosed that as Prince (Dr.) Dapo Abiodun led- administration expected optimum performance from the beneficiaries, the ministry has organised supplementary training for all the 3, 500 farmers selected through a transparent and all-inclusive system across the 20 Local Government Areas in the state.

Assuring of supervision of the farmland, Odedina disclosed that 74 hectares of land were allotted to the 127 cassava farmers in various locations including Otete, Idagba, Igbogila, Sanwonjo and Imasayi, all in Yewa North, with a projection of 40 tonnes per hectares as against the 25 tonnes expected from each beneficiary.

Another Federal Government-funded programme is underway to serve as a rewarding model for successful farmers, who are able to meet up with the expectations of the on-going programme, said he.

Akinbode Adeneye, Chairman of Nigeria Cassava Growers Association, Ogun State Chapter, and beneficiaries of the scheme including Kunle Fashola and Falana Adijat, in their separate remarks also applauded the application and selection processes for the programmes.

They said that it was an attestation of the transparency and inclusive policy of the present administration, as beneficiaries were chosen across religion and ethnic backgrounds, report added.
