Sequel to the recent leadership crisis rocking the academic community, Malam Adamu Adamu, Honourable Minister for Education, has inaugurated a seven-member presidential panel to investigate the crisis in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and submit recommendations to normalise activities in the institution.

绿帽献妻 learnt Malam Adamu, at the inauguration of the panel Wednesday, August 26 in Abuja, FCT, urged members of the investigative panel to conclude its assignment and submit its report to the Federal Government in two weeks.

Prof. Tukur Sa鈥檃d heads the presidential panel, while other members include Prof. Adamu Usman, UBEC Board Chairman; and Prof. Ikenna Onyedo, former Vice-chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike.

Others are Prof. Ekanem Braid, former Vice-Chancellor Cross River State University; Prof. Victor Onoha, Alhaji Jimoh Bankole, former Bursar, University of Ibadan; and Mrs. Grace Ekanem, Director, Legal Services, Ministry of Education, serving as Secretary.

The visitation panel is expected to view the report of the Governing Council’s Sub-Committee on review of the university since May 2017, afford all those indicted an opportunity to defend themselves, and make appropriate recommendations, says report.

The Minister said: 鈥淭hey are to examine the steps taken by the Council leading to the removal of the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, and ascertain whether due process was followed as stipulated in the universities amendment act 2003, and the principle of fair hearing adhered to.

鈥淭o determine whether the process (if any) leading to the appointment of the acting Vice-Chancellor for the university was consistent with the provisions of the enabling Act.

鈥淭o make appropriate recommendations, including sanctions for all those found culpable by the special visitation team, on allegations contained in the report as well as other subsequent actions arising therefrom.”

The panel, according to the Minister, also is to “make recommendations that will assist the government in taking decisions that will ensure peaceful, stable and effective administration of the university.鈥�

In the meantime, Adamu has urged stakeholders in UNILAG to fully cooperate with the panel and allow it to work unfettered.

Prof. Sa’ad, Chairman of the panel, commended the Minister for finding the members of the committee worthy for the national assignment.
