The Federal Government of Nigeria has resolved to inject over N600billion as stimulus response into the country鈥檚 agricultural sector in its renewed efforts at ensuring food security and sustainability in the country.

Alhaji Mohammed Sabo Nanono, Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, in a statement by Theodore Ogaziechi, Director of Information in the Ministry Sunday, August 30 in Abuja, FCT, disclosed that the fund would target small-scale farmers so as to ensure food security and sustainability for consumers.

The Minister had mentioned this while on a tour of Dangote Fertiliser Plant, and during a crucial meeting with other fertiliser companies in Lagos to galvanise their cooperation for the production of inputs.

The N600bn stimulus response, which targets farmers nationwide, would take off with an initial 2.4 million farmers in the first instance.

Nanono, however, noted that in order to prevent the abuse of government funds and good intentions in this regard, the support would be in kind, in forms of inputs and not cash as was the practice in the past.

According to the Minister, the mandatory closure of all international borders, necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has made it evident that the country could conveniently and sustainably feed itself.

He pledged to support the farming communities in Lagos State with rural roads, solar lighting and water boreholes with a view to empowering them to increase productivity.

The Minister also promised to collaborate with the Lagos State Government in the fishing sector to tap the potential of the state鈥檚 marine endowments and reduce fish importation into Nigeria.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on the occasion, the promised to collaborate with the Federal Government not only in the fishing sector but also to join forces to embark on mechanised farming.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that Lagos would complement the Federal Government鈥檚 effort when it completes its rice mill project (at Imota, Ikorodu).

The governor described the project as the largest rice mill in Nigeria with a capacity to mill approximately 30 million metric tonnes of rice per annum.

It would help Nigeria focus more on the exportation of rice and the downward review of prices at the retail market, said he.
