Gbenga Kayode | ñ

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has described the ongoing construction of the iconic 700 Km Highway, 10-lane Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a road project represents a crucial step in his administration’s efforts at enhancing connectivity, facilitating economic growth, and improving the quality of life for Nigerian consumers.

ñ reports President Tinubu stated this in his address presented at the official flag off of the construction of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway flagship project, two other legacy projects, and rehabilitation of roads and bridges nationwide Sunday, May 26, 2024, in Lagos.

The President said the event marked a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards progress and development.

He stated: “The flag off of this 700 Km Highway, a 10-lane road project represents a crucial step in our efforts to enhance connectivity, facilitate economic growth and improve the quality of life for our people.

“This project is more than just a road – it is a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity. It will connect our communities in nine states, foster trade and commerce, boost tourism and create new opportunities for generations to come.”

In a comparative analysis of same iconic project and its socio-economic benefits in other lands, President Tinubu noted that a similar road in Ireland, called the Wild Atlantic Way, 2,600km long is expected to fetch €3 billion (Euro) a year in tourism revenues.

Gratitude to stakeholders for quality work

Appreciating the stakeholders on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, the Nigerian leader commended H.E. Engr. (Sen.) Dave Umahi, Honourable Minister for Works Honourable Minister for Works and the Staff of the Ministry, for ensuring that the contractor delivers good quality work.

He equally said: “I want to express my gratitude to the team of engineers, workers, and stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to bring us to this point. Your dedication and expertise are the driving force behind the take-off of this project.

“As we embark on this journey, let us remember the importance of safety, sustainability, and social responsibility. Let us work together to ensure that this project benefits everyone, and that we leave a lasting legacy for our children and grandchildren.

“This is not only a legacy project of this administration but a dream come true that will connect some neglected towns and cities along the coastal route.”

In regard to other key benefits of the project, Tinubu explained both Tin Can Island and Apapa Ports, in Lagos, are becoming shallower thereby limiting the size of ships that can berth at those strategic ports over time.

He stated the Lagos State Government in partnership with private investors, however, developed Lekki Deep Sea Port located in the state, which “does not have a link road.”

According to him, it is obvious that the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a good development that will open up businesses and investment along the project corridor.

He further said: “The potential of this road is enormous because it will have two spurs which will link up with Sokoto–Badagry Expressway which is under procurement and African Trade Route which connects South-East to Cameroon, thereby connecting every region of the country.

“It is worthy to state that the model of EPC+F (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Plus Finance), which the Ministry is adopting is commendable.

“This sees the Federal Government investing while waiting for private investors to bring on board their counterpart funds.”

Appeal for understanding to make project a success

President Tinubu, in his address on Sunday, further appealed for the understanding of the general public, especially those whose properties and sources of livelihood would be impacted by the road infrastructure project.

He assured: “We all make some sacrifice to enable our country grow…. But be rest assured that this government is a compassionate government that cares for you and will do the utmost to offer succour, by way of compensation.”

Tinubu stated: “May God continue to bless our dear Nation Nigeria.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured investors in the energy sector of his administration’s resolve to further enhance the business environment and ensure investment convenience.

Tinubu stated this Wednesday, May 15, 2024, when he virtually inaugurated three milestone projects, which are the expanded AHL Gas Processing Plant; the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, and the 23.3km ANOH to Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Custody Transfer Metering Station Gas Pipeline, in the State House, Abuja, FCT.

Speaking during the inauguration of the projects, President Tinubu also assured Nigerians that his administration is accelerating coordination of other landmark projects and initiatives that would ensure the earliest realisation of gas-fuelled prosperity in the West African country.

He further noted that the projects are fully in line with the “Decade of Gas” Initiative and his government’s vision to grow value from Nigeria’s abundant gas assets while concurrently eliminating gas flaring and accelerating industrialisation.

Ajuri Ngelale, Presidential Spokesman stated President Tinubu said: “This event is highly significant to our country as it demonstrates the administration’s concerted efforts to accelerate the development of critical gas infrastructure geared at significantly enhancing the supply of energy to boost industrial growth and create employment opportunities.

“It is pleasing that when these projects become fully operational, approximately 500MMscf of gas in aggregate will be supplied to the domestic market from these two gas processing plants, which represents over 25% incremental growth in gas supply.”

The Nigerian President stated: “In practical terms, this is more gas to the power sector, gas-based industries, and other critical segments of the economy.

“I, therefore, commend the strategic vision of the NNPC Limited and its partners, Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) and Seplat Energy Plc, for this laudable and value-adding projects.”

He equally emphasised that his administration remains determined in its bid to leverage the country’s vast gas capacity to drive economic growth.

The President also explained: “Aside from the Presidential CNG Initiative which is aimed at moving the good people of Nigeria away from petrol and diesel as vehicular combustion fuel, significant progress has also been recorded in incentivising gas development through Presidential Directives.

“The theme of this inauguration – ‘From Gas to Prosperity; Renewed Hope’, must be adopted by all gas-sector participants and would-be investors as a clarion call to ramp up efforts to accelerate investment and developments of projects in the gas sector on a win-win basis.”

The Nigerian leader noted: “I would once again, commend the efforts of NNPC Limited, alongside SEEPCO and Seplat Energy, on this business partnership initiative, and congratulate you all on the successful implementation of the three projects.”

The President as well restated his administration’s resolve to continue to provide support in deepening domestic gas utilisation, increase national power generation capacity, revitalise industries, and create multiple job opportunities for economic growth.

He said: “Today (Wednesday), I have the singular honour to inaugurate the expansion of the AHL Gas Processing Plant, the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, and the 23.3Km ANOH to Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Custody Transfer Metering Station Gas Pipeline Projects in line with my administration’s resolve to provide energy for Nigerians, and to use our vast natural gas resources to transform Nigeria.”
