*The US Food and Drug Administration recalls Atorvastatin calcium tablets that may not dissolve properly, thereby reducing their effectiveness, urging senior consumers to check their medications

Isola Moses | 蟯簽瓬ぺ

The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a nationwide recall of Atorvastatin calcium tablets, a generic version of the widely used cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor used by several millions of senior citizens.

蟯簽瓬ぺ reports the FDA said the current recall had become necessary following lab tests that indicated the pills might not dissolve properly potentially reducing their effectiveness in consumers.

Nigerian Government releases 50 tax exemptions, reliefs under new Tax Reforms Laws (Full List)

The recall covers multiple strengths (10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg) and approximately 141,984 bottles distributed by Ascend Laboratories, LLC, and manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Limited, in India.

The issue affects bottles with expiry dates ranging from mid-2026 to early 2027, the American health sector regulatory agency also said.

According to FDA, a large quantity of the tablets failed to meet dissolution specifications, meaning the pills did not break down as expected in lab testing.

Subsequently, the consumers body may absorb less of the active ingredient, lowering the drugs cholesterol-fighting impact.

The agency also has classified the incident as a Class II recall, indicating that while serious harm is unlikely, temporary or medically reversible health effects are possible in consumers.

Why seniors are at greater risk, by experts

Older adults are among the most frequent users of statin therapy, and experts have warned that any loss of potency in Atorvastatin could undermine cardiovascular protection:

  • High reliance on statins: Many seniors use atorvastatin to lower cholesterol, reduce plaque buildup, and prevent heart attacks or strokes. If the drug doesnt dissolve properly, the risk of heart events could rise.
  • Compounded health factors: Seniors often take multiple medications. An underperforming statin could complicate treatment plans and increase the need for closer monitoring.
  • Silent danger: Because cholesterol control doesnt produce immediate symptoms, patients might not realise their medication isnt working until a major event occurs.
  • Prescription confusion: Those using mail-order refills or multiple pharmacies may need to double-check bottles for affected lot numbers and NDC codes.

As regards what consumers should do, if they are affected, the health officials stressed that patients should not stop taking their statin without first consulting a healthcare provider.

They are equally advised to do the following:

  • Check your bottle: Compare your medications lot number and expiration date against the recall list, available through pharmacies and the FDA website.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist: If your bottle is part of the recall, ask for a replacement or alternative statin from a different manufacturer.
  • Continue monitoring: Keep watch for symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath and report changes promptly.
  • Keep records: Maintain a simple list of your medications, manufacturers, and refill dates to make future recalls easier to verify.

Described as a quiet but serious issue, it is also noted though this recall is not considered a medical emergency, it highlights a critical vulnerability in generic drug quality control and a reminder for millions of seniors who depend on statins to verify that their medication is working as intended, report said.

*Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka avers I am still looking into my past history. I dont have any past criminal record, or even a felony or misdemeanor to qualify for the (visa) revocation by the United States Consulate in Nigeria

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka Tuesday, October 28, 2025, said his proposed entry into the United States (US) had become impossible, following a visa revocation by the American countrys consulate in Nigeria.

The letter dated October 23, 2025, and issued by the Non-Immigrant Visa (NIV) Section of the US Consulate, in Lagos, noted that his previously held Non-Immigrant Visa has been revoked in accordance with US Department of State regulations.

Illegal Drug Parties: NDLEA scapegoats Proxy Club with forfeiture of property, warns Nigerian youths

Soyinka, who affirmed this development at a media briefing at Kongis Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, on Lagos Island, Tuesday said he was truly notified by the Consulate, but that he is still unaware of any act on his part that would justify such an action.

The Nobel Laureate also stated: I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States. And if you want to see me, you know where to find me.

In the letter shown to news reporters, the revocation was effected pursuant to regulatory authority, but no specific reason was cited in this regard.

According to Soyinka, he has no criminal record, felony or misdemeanour, stating that he is still looking into my past history I dont have any past criminal record or even a felony or misdemeanor to qualify for the revocation.

He equally explained that his decision to hold the media briefing was for individuals in the United States, who would be expecting his participation in certain events to not expend time or resources in vain after all.

He further said: It is necessary for me to hold this conference, so that people in the United States who are expecting me for this event or that event do not waste their time.

Soyinkas visa was classified under the B1/B2 category (temporary non-immigrant visa for business or tourism).

It is recalled that Prof. Soyinka, September 2025, had openly declined an invitation by the US Consulate in Nigeria to attend a visa re-interview, scheduled for September 11 this year.

He rather described such a letter from the US Consulate as bizarre, and disclosed that he initially, mistook it for a scam.

Sources showed he described the process as one but he had more important things to attend to than chase visas for places where I am not wanted.

Expressing surprise at the visa revocation letter with no prior indication or explanation, Soyinka said: Im still looking into my past history. I dont have any past criminal record or even a felony or misdemeanour to qualify for the revocation.

Isola Moses | 蟯簽瓬ぺ

Coca-Cola, a leading global beverages conglomerate, is recalling about 70,000 select cans of Coke, Coke Zero Sugar and Sprite after metal fragments were discovered during routine quality checks in the United States (US).

蟯簽瓬ぺ gathered that the current product recall is due to a foreign matter contamination, specifically metal fragments that pose a laceration or illness for product consumers.

Report also indicated the affected packs which were sold in Texas, in the US, included 12-, 24- and 35-packs respectively.

Affirming the development, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated theres an active recall on the three types of Coca-Cola soda in Texas, due to a foreign matter contamination, agency report said.

According to FDA, the following UPC and lot codes are affected by this recall:

  1. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar (12-pack) with UPC 49000042559 and lot code FEB0226MAA
  2. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar (35-pack) with UPC 49000058499 and lot code FEB0226MAA

  6. Sprite (12-pack) with UPC 49000028928 and lot code JUN2926MAA or JUN3026MAB

It was also learnt that as this recall currently only impacts retailers in Texas, it might expand, and it is already affecting well over 70,000 cans of Coca-Cola products across the state. The drinks may contain metal fragments, posing a laceration or illness hazard for consumers.

For perpetrating economic sabotage and other illegalities, the Nigerian Government has announced it completed the deportation of 192 foreign nationals convicted for several cybercrime-related offences in the West African country.

蟯簽瓬ぺ reports the Federal Government’s move followed a recent joint operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to address the menace in the country’s digital ecosystem.

A cross-section of some other convicted foreigners scheduled for deportation

The Nigerian court had sentenced the convicts, drawn from China, the Philippines, Tunisia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Timor-Leste, and ordered them deported in accordance with court rulings and established immigration procedures in the West African country.

It is noted the deportation exercise marked the conclusion of a major enforcement operation, which began after the earlier arrest of 759 suspects during a sting operation December 10, 2024, at Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

During their prosecution, the Federal High Court, in Lagos, had convicted the suspects for offences, including cyber-terrorism, money laundering, and Ponzi scheme activities.

The government undertook the deportation, which commenced on August 15, 2025, in several batches, according to report.

The first group, comprising 42 Chinese and Filipino nationals, was repatriated in mid-August, while others followed through August and September this year.

Whereas the Nigerian authorities deported the final batch of 51 convicts, including 50 Chinese nationals and a Tunisianwas deported October 16, 2025, thereby concluding the operation.

Cited EFCC sources disclosed the deported foreign nationals were among a network of foreign and Nigerian suspects arrested during a coordinated crackdown on an international cybercrime ring operating under the name Genting International Company Limited.

Further investigations indicated that the cybercrime syndicate managed fraudulent digital platforms being used to defraud several victims both within and outside Nigeria.

An official of the EFCC reportedly stated: The operation was based on actionable intelligence that led to the dismantling of a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate.

Their activities involved online fraud, identity theft, and Ponzi-style investment schemes.

The coordinated repatriation among the three regulatory agencies is said to have underlined an ongoing inter-agency collaboration to combat cybercrime, and enforce judicial directives involving foreign offenders in the digital and financial crime ecosystem in Nigeria.

Isola Moses | 蟯簽瓬ぺ

Sequel to increasing complaints by customers and other consumers of financial products and services, the House of Representatives in the National Assembly (NASS), in Abuja, FCT, has summoned Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and top executives of major commercial banks to clarify the reported irregular deductions and multiple bank charges affecting millions nationwide.

蟯簽瓬ぺ reports the House, at a plenary Tuesday, October 14, 2025, made the resolution to invite Dr. Cardoso and banks’ top executives, following a motion by Muktar Shagaya, a Federal legislator representing Ilorin West/Asa constituency.

Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of CBN

Shagaya, in his motion had accused commercial banks of imposing multiple and unjustified charges on customers, often in violation of existing Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) guidelines.

He noted that such recurring deductions, including SMS alert fees, card maintenance charges, interbank transfer costs, and account upkeep levies.

Observers said the development came amid widespread public frustration over the country’s worsening economic climate.

Still, inflation has exceeded 30 percent while the Naira has continued to slide against major currencies, according to report.

The Federal lawmaker also argued that many of such illegal deductions are either duplicated, or could not be explained.

Shagaya: Banks’ arbitrary deductions undermine consumer confidence

Explaining the danger of eroding public confidence in the banking system, Shagaya caution CBN and the commercial banks that such irregular practices are apparently undermining public confidence in the banking system, and frustrating financial inclusion efforts.

He stated: While banks are expected to provide essential financial services at fair and transparent costs, the experiences of ordinary Nigerians show a pattern of exploitation and opacity.

The Green Chamber of NASS, therefore, directed its Committee on Banking Regulations to organiser an investigative hearing within four weeks.

The House equally mandated the CBN Governor and Chief Executives of commercial banks to appear before lawmakers to justify the reported arbitrary deductions from their bank accounts, and propose measures to protect consumers.

CBN mandates to publish approved charges for banks, OFIs

In ensuring the applicable charges are fair to consumers, the House of Representatives urged the CBN to publish a simplified list of approved bank charges, and to penalise any banks and Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) found to have breached the extant rules.

The Federal Legislature as well mandated the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) commence a nationwide sensitisation campaign to inform customers of their rights and avenues for redress against unfair banking practices.

Isola Moses | 蟯簽瓬ぺ

Following the Associations recent three-day strike against the Dangote Petroleum Refinery over Labor issues, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has decried the massive disruptions caused to the Critical National Assets by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigerias (PENGASSAN) industrial action.

蟯簽瓬ぺ reports the anti-Dangote Refinerys strike actually wiped out a substantial portion of the countrys oil and gas output.

Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPCL, disclosed this development in a letter dated 29 September, 2025, and addressed to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

Engr. Ojulari said the PENGASSANs action, triggered by a dispute between Association and Dangote Refinery, had led to the deferment of 283,000 barrels of crude oil per day and 1.7 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily in the country.

He specifically noted that losses represented about 16 percent of national oil production, 30 percent of marketed gas, and 20 percent of electricity supply respectively.

The NNPCL Chief Executive described the financial toll on the state oil company as severe and compounding.

The GCEO as well copied the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ojulari: Strike forced shutdown of oil terminals, gas plants, power facilities

Explaining the extent of damage, which the PENGASSANs strike had visited on the critical national oil and gas resources within three days, he affirmed that the strike forced the shutdown of oil terminals, gas plants and power facilities across the country, delaying critical maintenance programmes.

According to him, such critical maintenance programmes include the USAN turnaround, AKPO GT-3 pigging, H2 well tests, annual compressor maintenance and SEPNU EAP IGE.

He further cautioned that continued disruptions could worsen production deferments and trigger demurrage claims from international buyers as loading schedules slip.

The industrial action, he stated, posed systemic risks to Nigerias energy supply and fiscal stability, calling for a sustainable solution that prevents extensive interruptions to national energy security.

It is recalled that PENGASSAN Wednesday, October 1, 2025, suspended the strike after the Federal Governments intervention, though the Association warned that the peace accord was temporary.

Speaking on the latest development, Festus Osifo, President of PENGASSAN, told reports in Abuja, FCT: We are only suspending, not calling off the strike.

Any breach of the agreement by Dangote and we will immediately resume our industrial action.

Earlier, the Labour union had accused the Dangote Petroleum Refinery of mass transfers, dismissals, and replacing the Nigerian staff with expatriates.

Dangote, however, has since denied the allegations against the company, insisting that its internal reorganisation was only operational.

As Dangote Refinery alleged that PENGASSAN had declared the strike over payment of Union dues, and an attempt to disrupt operations at the $20 billion oil refinery, Osifo dismissed such a suggestion about Union dues or an attempt to undermine the multibillion-Dollar refinery.

The President of PENGASSAN rather explained: This is about freedom of association and fair pay.

Our members are the backbone of Nigerias oil and gas sector, which funds more than 90 percent of Foreign Exchange (Forex) earnings.

We are here to defend their rights, not to destroy investment.

The leadership of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum (NDMP), as well as the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), have all been evading the service of the Court Order, restraining them from embarking on their planned industrial action against Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, in Lagos.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery, in a statement, said a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, George Ibrahim, from Ogwu James Onoja Law Firm, in Abuja, FCT, had argued the application and secured the restraining order against the defendants Monday, September 29, 2025.

Justice Emmanuel Danjuma Subilim held that the balance of convenience was in favour of the Applicant as the continuation of the strike would irreparably damage its business and cripple the provision of essential services to the Nigerian public.

The Judge held that it was in the interest of justice for the court to restrain the defendants to preserve the industrial peace and aid the continuous provision of essential services to the Nigerian public, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Consequently, the court ordered the service of the restraining order and motion on notice on the defendants.

However, lead counsel to Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, James Onoja (SAN), stated that all efforts to serve the Court Order on the defendants proved abortive, as they claimed to be on strike.

The court specifically barred the defendants from cutting crude and gas supply to Dangote Refinery.

The Court Order also restrained the defendants from embarking on any industrial action against the claimant, with a view to crippling, blocking roads or obstructing the flow of vehicular movement, shutting down operations of the claimant or licensees of the 2nd to 4th defendants named in the 1st defendants directives dated September 26, 2025 or by any means frustrating the businesses/activities of the claimant/Applicant, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The Academic Union stated: If at the end of the 14 days’ ultimatum, the Federal Government fails to address these issues, the union may have no option than to, first, embark on a two-week warning strike and thereafter, an indefinite strike.”

Piwuna also recalled that ASUU had repeatedly raised concerns through media engagements, campus rallies and appeals over the past three months, without concrete response from government.

The Union further listed the unresolved issues to include, renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding, revitalisation of public universities, and non-payment of outstanding 2535 percent salary arrears.

The President of ASUU listed other unresolved issues to include promotion arrears spanning over four years, non-remittance of third-party deductions, and alleged victimisation of members at the Lagos State University (LASU), KSU and Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).

The Union, in the statement, urged Nigerians, including religious and traditional leaders, parents, students and other stakeholders, to prevail on Federal Government to act immediately in order to avoid an imminent strike.

Prof. Piwuna said: The 14-day ultimatum is an alarm to the Nigerian Government.

We believe the government has the capacity and financial strength to fix Nigerian universities once and for all.

As they say, a stitch in time saves nine.”

*Dangote Petroleum Refinery insists the directive of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria to members to cut off oil and gas supplies to the oil-refining facility over their dispute threatens fuel availability, government revenue, describing Association’s move as ‘a brazen display of lawlessness and criminality’

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has accused the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) of attempting to sabotage the West African countrys energy supply chain.

Dangote’s reaction followed a directive PENGASSAN issued to its branches to disconnect crude oil and gas supplies to the its refinery, in Lagos.

Dangote Refinery, which said this in a statement at the weekend, described the Association’s directive as a brazen display of lawlessness and criminality.

The Refinery also warned that the Association’s resort to disruption of oil and gas supply chain could plunge Nigeria into widespread fuel scarcity and disrupt the availability of key petroleum products, including petrol, aviation fuel, kerosene, diesel, and cooking gas again.

It is recalled that PENGASSAN September 26 had instructed its members in various multinational oil companies and subsidiaries, including TotalEnergies, Seplat, Renaissance, Chevron, Oando, Shell Nigeria Gas, and NGIC to halt crude oil loading operations, and cut off gas supply to the facility with immediate effect.

The Dangote Refinery stressed that PENGASSAN has no legal authority to interfere with contracts signed between the company and its suppliers.

According to the oil-refining company, such interference amounts to economic sabotage against both Dangote Refinery and Nigeria.

The statement noted: This is a brazen, albeit shocking display of lawlessness and criminality by PENGASSAN. Absolutely no law gives PENGASSAN the right to direct its branches to ‘cut off’ gas and crude oil supplies to Dangote Refinery or at all.

There is also no law in our statute books that would support or enable the PENGASSAN branches having to ‘cut off’ gas and crude oil supplies to Dangote Refinery or at all.”

Dangote further stated: Besides, it constitutes a criminal conduct for PENGASSAN or its members to disrupt and/or interfere howsoever in the contract between Dangote Refinery and its various vendors for the supply of gas and crude oil to the Refinery.

Those supply contracts were not entered into with PENGASSAN; they were entered into by Dangote Refinery with third party vendors and suppliers and PENGASSAN has no right whatsoever to disrupt and/or interfere with the performance of those contracts.”

PENGASSAN needs to be reminded that Nigeria is a country governed by laws, the company averred.

Dangote stated: Our laws do not brook self-help and mob action that could introduce mayhem and chaos and easily translate into anarchy.”

As the worlds largest single-train refinery, and one of Nigerias highest taxpayers, Dangote Refinery as well argued that the directive of the Association undermines investor confidence, threatening revenues accruing to Federal and state governments.

The company also described the Dangote Refinery as a strategic national asset that should be safeguarded rather than targeted.

It said: We are, by this write-up, drawing the attention of the Federal Government and its security and law enforcement agencies as well as all other levels of governments in Nigeria to this criminal, lawless, reckless and irresponsible conduct of PENGASSAN and calling on them the Federal Government and its agencies, in particular to call the Association to order.

PENGASSAN has no right to introduce anarchy and mayhem into our society. The Association is not above the law, and it must not be allowed to believe that it is or behave as if it is.”

The statement further criticised the union for what it called a contradictory stance, noting that while PENGASSAN had earlier pledged to pursue legal action against the refinery, it abandoned the path of lawfulness and embraced mob action.

The refinery noted that apart from the lawlessness and criminality inherent in the PENGASSANs instruction to its branches, the Associations directive amounts to economic sabotage at multiple levels.

Dangote said: “In plain language, PENGASSAN has directed its branches to disrupt and stop the supply of petroleum products from the Dangote Refinery to Nigerians.

The products that would be disrupted and stopped include but are not limited to aviation fuel, petrol, kerosene, diesel and cooking gas all products that are used and required by all stripes of Nigerians and persons living in Nigeria, whether high and mighty or lowly and ordinary.

In what circumstance would it be justified for PENGASSAN to so disrupt and introduce insufferable hardship into the living conditions of Nigerians? None that we can see.

The follow up question is, in whose interest and on whose behalf is PENGASSAN directing and intending to inflict such anarchic and criminal disruption upon the Nigerian society and persons living in Nigeria?

Most certainly, not in the interest of the Nigerian State and/or the Nigerian public and citizens.”

Dangote Refinery described the PENGASSAN position as constituting economic sabotage against the Nigerian State at multiple levels as the company is the only refinery of its type in Africa and ordinarily should be the pride of all Nigerians as well as the governments of Nigeria.

“It should ordinarily have special protection and status and indeed qualifies as a strategic national asset.

An irreparable injury to the Dangote Refinery such as PENGASSAN has directed constitutes a national embarrassment to all of us.”

The directive is a disincentive to external investors who ordinarily would have been encouraged by the success of Dangote Refinery to contemplate investing in Nigerias oil and gas sector or generally.

PENGASSAN may also not be aware that Dangote Refinery is one of the largest contributors to the revenue purse of the Nigerian governments both Federal and sub-nationals.

That contribution is currently threatened by PENGASSAN and would of course be paused if and as soon as and for as long as the PENGASSAN directive is implemented by its branches,” it added.

Calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to intervene, the company urged Nigerians to resist any attempt to disrupt refinery operations, warning that compliance with the directive would cause irreparable hardship for households and businesses nationwide.

The statement noted: We are also calling on all Nigerians to take note of the unquantifiable and irredeemable hardship which PENGASSAN wishes to inflict on all of us.

There is no Nigerian household that does not use or need the petroleum products which PENGASSAN has now directed its branches, by fiat, to withdraw from the Nigerian market again, we list some of them: petrol, cooking gas, diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel.”

The Refinery stated: The production and supply of these products by Dangote Refinery would cease if the PENGASSAN cabal is allowed or permitted to enforce its lawless and criminal ‘directive’.

The Association must not be allowed to ride roughshod on Nigerians. The repercussions from the PENGASSAN directive would affect and inflict harm on all Nigerians This is therefore a fight for all Nigerians.”
