FRSC warns Nigerian motorists against patronising unauthorised number plate vendors

Following recent rising cases of unauthorised number plates in circulation, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for the umpteenth time, has warned the Nigerian motorists to desist from patronising touts and unapproved vendors when processing and obtaining their vehicle number plates.

ñ reports the FRSC, as the lead regulatory agency on road safety administration and management in Nigeria, stated this is pursuant to its primary role of advancing national security and safety of individuals through rigorous intelligence gathering linked to the among others.

Mr. Bisi Kazeem, Corps Public Education Officer, who disclosed this development, said this warning came subsequent to reliable intelligence got from the ongoing nationwide clampdown on the rising cases of unauthorised number plates in circulation.

Kazeem noted that the special operation has so far revealed that a number of the motorists are completely ignorant of the implications of using unauthorised number plates; hence their continuous patronage of touts for their vehicle registration and identification processes.

The Corps Spokesperson further explained that the FRSC, as a regulatory agency and Nigeria’s custodian of critical national intelligence infrastructure, has overtime admonished the motoring public to always go through appropriate authorities when obtaining their vehicle number plates.

This is important because a proper vehicle registration is not only a catalyst to road safety, but national security, and the Corps is not ready to allow any road user become an instrument for the breach of laws and order guiding vehicle operations in the country, said Kazeem.

Dr. Oyeyemi was quoted to have stated further, that “the relevance of the National Vehicle Information Scheme in enhancing national security cannot be over emphasised at this critical time of our national development.

“As such, vehicle owners must endeavour to ensure that when registering their vehicles, the appropriate channel is religiously followed and third party involvement should be completely avoided in all aspect of vehicle registration.”

Accordingly, the FRSC restated that all Number Plates produced by the Corps can only be obtained by vehicle owners from the Motor Licensing Authorities of the various states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Anything outside this makes you vulnerable to obtaining fake and unauthorised vehicle identification and such vehicles cannot be captured in the ,” the Corps warned.
