Government assures Nigerian women of improved inclusiveness in budgets, appointments

For gender-responsive budgets, inclusiveness in national plans and actions, including public appointments in the West African country, the Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to give more attention to the womenfolk.

ñ reports the government disclosed this development at a recent Town Hall meeting at the Women Development Centre, in Yola, Adamawa State capital.

The United Nations (UN) in a statement noted Matthias Schmale, Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, and Samuela Isopi, EU Ambassador to Nigeria, attended the programme.

Other Nigerian top government officials in attendance were Mrs. Pauline Tallen, Honourable Minister for Women Affairs Minister; Clem Agba, Honourable Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, and Heads of Spotlight Initiative Agencies.

Agba disclosed that the Federal Government is working on attaining a “gender-responsive budget, gender inclusiveness in plans and actions including in public appointments” in the Nigeria.

The Minister also advocated strengthened coordination mechanisms across the 36 states, the FCT and the major thematic areas.

He stated that “it is this effective coordination that will support sustainable results.”

Agba further acknowledged EU-UN contributions “in fostering transformative change and instituting meaningful milestones around the elimination of violence against women and girls.”

Likewsie, Mrs. Tallen commended Governor Ahmadu Fintri of Adamawa State for the passage of the Violence against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP).

The Women Affairs Minister described the meeting as a great step towards the successful elimination of violence against women and girls in Adamawa.

Tallen also urged the Governor Fintiri to domesticate the Child’s Right Act (2003) in the state.

She said: “I know you are working assiduously with the House of Assembly to make sure this comes true.”

In his remark at the forum, Fintiri stressed his administration’s zero-tolerance to Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV).

He stated: “I signed the VAPP Act into law. I will work with the House of Assembly to ensure we domesticate the Child’s Right Act.”
