Infrastructure: Flood cuts off Kano-Maiduguri Expressway as motorists seek alternative routes

Following a recent heavy rainfall, flood has severely damaged and cut off the Federal highway connecting Kano State to Maiduguri, Borno State capital, in Northern Nigeria.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the damage to the highway particularly affected the portion between the Malori and Guskuri villages, in the Katagum Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State.

Consequently, the incident has created a large crater in the middle of the road, thereby forcing motorists to find alternative routes to the Northern state.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Thursday, August 8, 2024, visited the location for an assessment of the damaged expressway connecting Kano to Maiduguri.

Incidentally, Bauchi State has faced significant flooding this year, resulting in widespread destruction across several Local Government Areas, according to report.

Commenting on the development at the site, Governor Mohammad highlighted the significance of the road infrastructure as a crucial link between Nigeria’s North-West and North-East regions.

Appeal to Federal Government to rehabilitate damaged highway

The governor, while addressing reporters during his visit to the damaged portion of the road, urged the Federal Government to urgently initiative the repair the road to facilitate transportation of goods and services for the benefit of citizens in the regions.

He stated: “This is a major highway, the North-East highway, and the dual carriageways have been completely washed away.

“We are calling on the Federal Government to assist. We will report this issue to Abuja through the Controller of Works.

“If they are unable to address the problem, we will take action to implement remedial or permanent measures, as we did during the last rainy season.â€
