Flooding: Ogun State moves to create more tributaries for Ogun River for livable environment

In a way to solve the perennial flooding problems affecting the communities, the Ogun State Government (OGSG) has said it will create more tributaries and outlets for Ogun River across the wetland border towns of Isheri, Kara, Wawa and Arepo to make these areas liveable for the people.

Dr. Ola Oresanya, Honourable Commissioner for Environment in Ogun State, disclosed the state government’s intention during a recent consultative meeting with residents of Ogun River Basin Communities at the Riverview Estate, in Isheri.

Oresanya said the project would commence April 2025, and it would implement in phases, as its affect the people and some buildings.

The Commissioner noted the need to consult with the residents of the area before it commences in few weeks’ time.

Speaking on the state government’s intervention in the communities since last year, Oresanya also said the retention for flood in the area had reduced from five to six weeks to three weeks due to the dredging of Oparo River in the area.

He stated: “We are hoping to complete the dredging of that river to Majidun Area, in Ikorodu, in Lagos State, which is towards the Lagoon as well as other interventions.”

The Commissioner, therefore, enjoined the residents of the area to cooperate with the Ogun State Government to make the completion the dredging exercise as well as creation of tributaries and outlets for the Ogun River huge realities.

Responding, Mr. Olanrewaju Akinde, Chairman of the Ogun─Lagos River Basin Communities, said the meeting had renewed their hope, and were looking forward to Ogun State Government’s various interventions that would make their communities liveable.

Akinde explained that overtime the Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has proved to be reliable, and determined to solve the perennial flooding problems affecting the areas.
