Buhari: US closes Abuja Embassy and Lagos Consulate, reschedules visa appointments

The United States (US) Mission in Nigeria has said its Embassy, in Abuja, FCT, and the Consulate-General Office, in Lagos, would close Tuesday, July 15, 2025, to observe the national holiday declared by the Nigerian Government.

The US Mission, in a statement via its verified X account Monday, July 14, said the break was declared in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who Sunday, July 13, in London, United Kingdom (UK), at age 82.

The US Embassy also stated: “All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled,” the statement noted, ensuring affected applicants will receive new appointment dates.”

The closure reflects the mutual respect of the US Mission for Nigeria’s period of national mourning, aligning with the seven-day mourning period, announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during which flags will fly at half-staff across the West African country.

The Mission as well confirmed that normal operations would resume after the holiday.

The Nigerian Government, Monday, had declared Tuesday, July 15 a public holiday to honour late Buhari.

Buhari had served as president from 2015 to 2023, and previously as the country’s Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.

The deceased former Nigerian President was widely recognised for his anti-corruption efforts and contributions to Nigeria’s security policies.
