The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has clarified that its Early Exit Package implemented in 2024 was entirely voluntary, and not to target or destabilise Northerners, or any other region.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ gathered Muhammad Abdullahi, Deputy Governor on Economic Policy at CBN, stated this Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at a two-day Interactive Session on Government-Citizens Engagement, held in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria.

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation organised the programme.

Speaking during plenary on Governance and Economy, Abdullahi explained that the country’s banking sector regulator was congested at Corporate Headquarters, in Abuja, FCT, and the Management introduced an offer to anyone interested in exiting, but with a huge package.

The CBN Deputy Governor on Economic Policy also stated: “The bank was so crowded at the Headquarters and jam-packed that there was no space; the limited space and exit routes in the building were converted to offices, and hence not healthy for the workers.

“Due to the crowded and suffocating space, the insurance company expressed serious concerns about securing the building with its insurance policy, hence the need for decongestion.”

He further noted: “Meanwhile, there are ample spaces in the Bank’s offices in Lagos, Kaduna, and other places that could absorb a large number of workers from the Headquarters.”

Abdullahi stated: “Some of those staff members taken to Lagos and Kaduna are now so happy that they don’t even want to come back to Abuja.

“It is not an agenda against anybody.”

According to the top official, the CBN has been practising early exit in the last 20 years.

Abdullahi said this initiative has been done when the Management at the top is very heavy.

The Deputy Governor on Economic Policy clarified that “when such is observed, the governor will constitute a committee comprising the staff members, and they will come out with an offer, but only for those who want to take it. It is voluntary, not forced on anyone.”

He averred: “Some workers were very happy to take the exit offer, and establish a microfinance bank.

“So, is an opportunity for those who want to move ahead and do other things with their lives.”

On the Directorate cadre

Abdullahi as well explained that there were misinformation, and a wrong narrative about 16 Directors of the Bank, adding that such were unfortunate, agency report said.

He said: “Let me state here that there are a lot of Directors who are from the Northern Region and are currently working in the Bank.

“People should stop listening to unpatriotic elements that spread fake news to misguide and incite the masses.”

The Deputy Governor on Economic Policy disclosed “the son of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) was moved out of Abuja to Lagos.”

He added: “Nobody was spared. It is a policy of the bank. People should please understand all these.”
